Artist Statement
Rose is a painter who uses her own film, photography and performance as source material to explore the many facets of human desire, conscious and unconscious. Her sensuous, expressive paintings are purposefully amoral in subject. She often works on silk, faux suede or cotton velvet, to emphasise the heady attraction of life force, embodiment, understanding and awe. A considered use of the aesthetic hints at the power of visual beauty and pleasurable sensation, with works inciting a desire to touch or to be immersed in them. Rose’s work is partly shaped by a near-death experience in childhood, reflecting her interest in expressing desire for life. Rose also uses chance and less easily controlled materials in her art-making to mirror the chance of our existence and the chance element in whether or not our desires are fulfilled.
